SUITE FOR FLUTE AND HARPSICHORD
Flute and harpsichord (or piano) – duration c. 14
minutes: A.Mus.A
Prelude is a slightly tongue-in-cheek look at American
academic music of the latter part of the 20th century,
whilst Badinerie returns to the musical ideas of J.S.
Bach, at the same time incorporating some unusual harmonies
and quirky patterns for both instruments. American Dream
depicts the emotion of a gathering commemorating the life
of Martin Luther King. The final Toccata incorporates
thematic material from Aaron Copeland’s Fanfare
for the Common Man.

BENEATH THE YELLOW MOON
(A suite for violoncello and piano
in three movements.)
Cello and piano – c. 17 minutes: Grade 8 –
A.Mus.A.
The whole 3 movements of this piece form a large ternary
structure and the cello imitating the didjeridu at various
points in the score evokes a distinctly Australian feel.
Some opportunities are provided for improvising high harmonics
in the cello part during the third movement which suggests
images reminiscent of outback mirages.
Full score and cello part: $52.00

A COMPOSITION OF PLACE
SATB choir and piano - duration c. 4 minutes: advanced vocal and piano technique. The words by Australian poet Jeremy Nelson evoke scenes of the countryside, and inclusion of phrases such as 'red, raked Buddhist garden' and the reference to English hay stooks add colour to the fact that we are 'passing through a Heysen painting.' The music follows the moods of the poem, at times marching with the words and sometimes interjecting with exuberant chords and rhythms. The middle section features voice parts floating over a harp-like pattern in the accompaniment leading to an invigorating finale.
